1. Overview

The White House remained silent today, but former President Trump took to Truth Social to share several updates. First, he stated that Vladimir Putin had called to wish him a happy birthday and discuss Iran at length, along with brief mention of the Russia/Ukraine conflict with further discussions planned. Trump added that Putin is facilitating a large prisoner swap. He also reported being briefed on the Minnesota shooting targeting state lawmakers, vowing to prosecute those involved to the fullest extent of the law. Finally, Trump announced that the military parade would proceed regardless of weather conditions, expressing his anticipation to see everyone in Washington, D.C.

On Truth Social, Trump declared that Vladimir Putin called to wish him a happy birthday and discuss Iran at length. The Russia/Ukraine conflict was briefly mentioned, with further discussion scheduled for the following week, and Putin is reportedly facilitating a large prisoner swap. Trump also stated that he was briefed on the Minnesota shooting targeting state lawmakers and pledged to prosecute those involved. HHS celebrated the Army's 250th anniversary and wished President Trump a happy birthday, while Treasury honored Flag Day and praised the Army's service, with Secretary Bessent calling Trump "one of the greatest patriots to ever serve the American people." Commerce Secretary Lutnick praised Trump's support for America and American workers and his role in securing a Golden Share in the U.S. Steel deal.

Several 2028 Democratic presidential hopefuls tweeted in response to the Minnesota shooting. Gavin Newsom called for peaceful protest, stating, "There's no place for violence in our democracy," and retweeted a statement describing the shooting as "a targeted act of violence against public servants." Josh Shapiro expressed sorrow over the violence, stating that he and his wife were "pained by the news of yet another act of political violence in our country." Gretchen Whitmer called the shooting "another horrific act in the continued rise of political violence in America" and stated, "we must call out this violence, no matter who it’s aimed at or where it originates." JB Pritzker condemned the violence as "a direct attack on our American values and democracy," and Tim Walz stated that "We must stand united against violence" and said the flags in Minnesota will fly at half staff in honor of Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman.

The Senate was not in session on June 13, 2025, and will reconvene on June 16 to vote on the nomination of Gary Andres to be an Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services. The House of Representatives convened briefly, introducing seven public bills and two resolutions before adjourning. No committee meetings or hearings were held, and no votes were recorded. The House will meet in a Pro Forma session on Tuesday, June 17.
