1. Overview

The White House focused on economic policies and achievements. President Trump is in Pennsylvania today to promote a good partnership between U.S. Steel and Nippon Steel, a $14 billion investment expected to create 70,000 jobs. The administration launched a Permitting Technology Action Plan to modernize federal environmental review and permitting processes, aiming for efficiency and transparency. The White House also highlighted positive economic indicators, including decreased inflation, increased incomes, and a narrowing trade deficit, citing CNBC's Rick Santelli's positive assessment. Finally, President Trump issued an order mandating spending cuts for fiscal year 2026, directing the Office of Management and Budget to calculate the reductions.

President Trump used Truth Social to address a variety of topics. He lauded his pardon of Sheriff Scott Jenkins, promoted a book about the "near assassination of Donald Trump," and quoted Elon Musk on the future potential of DOGE. He also announced an increase in tariffs on steel and aluminum and urged the Texas House to pass SB8 and SB3 regarding immigration enforcement. Additionally, Trump criticized the Director of the National Portrait Gallery, Kim Sajet, for being a "highly partisan person," and criticized the Congressional Budget Office for its growth projections.

Government departments used Twitter to promote administration policies and share news. The State Dept retweeted statements regarding Ambassador Wooster's new role in Haiti, Trump's statements on international students, Trump's remarks on Putin and Ukraine, and the White House's announcement about DOGE saving taxpayers money. The DOD announced plans to reduce the discretionary Permanent Change of Station (PCS) budget by half over the next 5 years and retweeted a statement about the reorganization of the Office of the Director of Operational Test & Evaluation. HHS clarified COVID-19 vaccine recommendations, stating they are not recommended for pregnant women or healthy children. Treasury discussed trade with Japan, praised DOGE and Elon Musk's work, and blamed past administrations for the deficit. Commerce touted the impact of the "One, Big, Beautiful Bill" and Kraft Heinz's investment in U.S. manufacturing, while DOGE highlighted taxpayer savings attributed to efficiency measures.

Several 2028 Democratic presidential candidates used Twitter to critique the Trump administration and promote their own agendas. Gavin Newsom accused Republicans of using Medicaid cuts to fund tax breaks for the wealthy, stating Republicans are cutting millions of Californians from Medicaid in order to fund tax breaks for the wealthy while Newsom asserts that California will not stand by while politicians in Washington negatively impact Californians. Josh Shapiro emphasized the importance of mass transit funding and advocated for raising the minimum wage. Gretchen Whitmer highlighted Michigan's focus on advanced chip manufacturing. Wes Moore toured the Scout Motors factory and promoted investment in Maryland's future, and JB Pritzker issued an advisory due to Canadian wildfire smoke.

On May 29, 2025, the Senate was not in session and adjourned until the next day. The House of Representatives convened briefly to introduce numerous bills and resolutions and filed a report on H.R. 2483, which concerns reauthorization of programs for opioid use disorder prevention, treatment, and recovery. There were no recorded votes or committee hearings. The House is scheduled to meet in a pro forma session on June 2.

Trump Administration Launches Permitting Technology Action Plan

The Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) issued a Permitting Technology Action Plan to modernize Federal environmental review and permitting processes for infrastructure projects. Katherine Scarlett stated the "Trump Administration is working tirelessly to implement innovation-driven environmental review and permitting reforms to eliminate needless delays that cripple the growth of the U.S. economy." Thomas Shedd said they will ensure the Federal government is maximizing modern technologies to streamline permitting. Other cabinet members echoed similar sentiments, with Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum noting the plan would "channel our greatest asset, American innovation and technology, to overhaul our current permitting process," and Secretary of Transportation Sean P. Duffy added, "We are slashing the bureaucracy and getting back to actually building things in America again."
